Frequently asked questions
Where do the ratings come from?
Every rating comes from the Food Standards Agency's public data, which is filled in by local councils after each inspection. We don't change or add to it. If a rating looks wrong, contact the council that inspected the business.
Why can't I see a place?
New businesses, and places waiting for their first inspection, may not have a rating yet. Some businesses are exempt. Try searching by name if it doesn't show in Nearby.
Why are ratings in Scotland different?
Scotland uses its own scheme, run by Food Standards Scotland, where businesses get Pass or Improvement Required instead of a 0 to 5 score.
Why does Nearby show nothing?
Nearby needs location access. In the Settings app, find FSA Food Hygiene Ratings and allow location while using the app. You can still search without it.
A place has a rating of 0. Is it closed?
Not necessarily. 0 means urgent improvement is needed, and the council will be following it up. Businesses can ask for a re-inspection once they've fixed things.
Is this an official FSA app?
No. It uses the FSA's open data under the Open Government Licence, but it isn't made by or affiliated with the Food Standards Agency.
Does it cost anything?
No. The app is free and supported by ads.
