Frequently asked questions

Where is my stuff kept?

Everything is encrypted with AES-256 and stored only on your iPhone. It's left out of iCloud and computer backups, so it never leaves unless you share or export it.

What if I forget my PIN?

No one can recover it, not even us. There's no reset, by design. Keep your PIN somewhere safe.

I've got a new iPhone. How do I move my vault?

Your vault doesn't sync or back up, which is what keeps it private, so it can't move to a new phone by itself. Before you switch, export anything you want to keep from the old phone.

What is the decoy PIN?

A second PIN that opens a separate, believable set of items. If someone forces you to open Keep, enter the decoy. Nothing on the device shows that a second vault exists.

What are the self-destruct options?

In Settings › Self-Destruct you can wipe everything with five taps, wipe after a number of wrong PINs, or set a duress PIN that erases instead of opening.

How do I hide Keep itself?

On iOS 18 and later you can hide Keep in the App Library's Hidden folder, or just remove the icon from your Home Screen. Don't choose Delete App: deleting Keep erases everything in it, and it can't be recovered. In-app instructions are in Settings.

How does sharing stay private?

Items go straight to the other person's phone over an encrypted connection, sealed to their device's key. Our relay only helps the two phones find each other and can't read anything you share.

Can I take back something I shared?

Yes. Withdraw it from the person's page and it's erased from their phone the next time they open Keep. View-once and timed items erase themselves.

What if someone screenshots what I shared?

You're told, and everything you shared with them is erased from their phone. Keep also blurs shared items during screen recording.

How do I block or report someone?

Open the person in People and tap Block or Report. With a report you choose a reason, and you can attach what they sent you for the Review Team. We review every report within 24 hours. Reports about content involving a minor ban the person immediately.

I can't use sharing any more

Sharing is switched off for anyone found to have broken our Terms of Use. Everything in your own vault is still there. If you think this was a mistake, email the safety address above with your friend code.

Why does Keep show ads?

Ads keep Keep free. They appear around your vault, never inside it, and never see your photos, files or anything you share. To switch them all off, subscribe to Remove Ads in Keep's Settings.

Why do I have to watch a video before sharing?

Sharing is free, and a short video ad before you send something pays for the relay that carries it. Remove Ads skips it. If no ad is available, your share goes straight through.

How do I stop ads being personalised?

Choose "Ask App Not to Track" when Keep asks, or turn it off later in Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking. In the UK and EU you can also change your consent in Keep's Settings › Privacy Choices for Ads. Ads still show, just not tailored to you.

How do I restore or cancel Remove Ads?

To restore it on a new or reset iPhone, open Keep's Settings › Remove Ads and tap Restore Purchases, signed in with the same Apple Account. To cancel, open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Ads come back when the current period ends.
