Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Port courses between Double Dash and Mario Kart Wii, in both directions.

Set up

In Settings > Games, link your Double Dash disc. The app reads each slot's minimap position from it, fills the Texture Gallery, and uses it as the base for Hot Swap. Turn on the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! tools there too.

Port Double Dash → Mario Kart Wii

  1. Open your Double Dash disc or its extracted Course folder.
  2. Right-click a course archive and choose Port > To Mario Kart Wii, or use Port from Double Dash to convert several courses at once.
  3. Set the Scale. Nintendo's own Wii remake of Mario Circuit is about 1.18× the original, a good starting point.
  4. Each course comes out as a .szs beside your disc image. Rename it to the track slot you want to replace, for example beginner_course.szs.

What comes across: the model, sky, collision (with walls), minimap and course data: start, CPU and item paths, checkpoints, respawn points, item boxes and intro cameras.

Port Mario Kart Wii → Double Dash

  1. Right-click a Wii track .szs and choose To Double Dash….
  2. Pick the course slot it replaces.
  3. Optionally Scale to fit the slot's minimap. Double Dash hardcodes each slot's minimap area, so the track is always centred on it; scaling also fills it, which changes how big the track feels to drive. Double Dash courses are roughly 1/1.32 the size of their Wii remakes.
  4. The app writes the slot's single-player and multiplayer archives (Course/<Slot>.arc and <Slot>L.arc) next to the track.

Lightmaps are baked into vertex colours, the minimap is generated, and the course data is checked the way the community's course editor checks it. Mario Kart Wii tolerates a fan of checkpoints around a hairpin that Double Dash doesn't, so non-convex checkpoint quads are repaired automatically.

Viewing Double Dash files

  • .bmd / .bdl models open in a view-only 3D viewer with their textures.
  • .btk and .bca animations open as per-target tracks you can scrub.
  • .arc course archives browse like any other archive.

Testing

Double Dash is GameCube, and Riivolution is Wii-only, so Hot Swap works differently here. See Testing & shipping.
