FAQ & troubleshooting
Quick answers to the questions that come up most.
General
Does Revolution Editor include games, keys or an emulator?
No. You supply your own disc images, your own key.bin, and (optionally) your own copy of Dolphin. Nothing is bundled or downloaded.
Can I download games with it?
No, and it never will. It's for managing and modding backups of games you own.
Is this the same as Wii Scrubber?
It started as a native Mac take on Wii Scrubber and still has all of its disc tools, but it's now a full modding editor. It is an independent reimplementation from public documentation; no Nintendo or Dolphin code is included.
Discs and keys
My Wii disc won't open
Check Settings > Keys: a valid 16-byte key.bin is required for Wii discs. Korean discs also need a kkey.bin.
Unscrub says it can't match my DIFF
Unscrub only works with the DIFF Revolution Editor made when you cleaned that exact image. It can't read the Windows Wii Scrubber's .dif files.
Can I replace files inside a GameCube disc?
You can browse and extract GameCube discs; edited files in a disc project are written back when you save.
Tracks and models
My track crashes or freezes on a real Wii but works in Dolphin
Switch Build for to Hardware-compatible, rebuild your model and collision, and check the Track Budget against retail. Run Check Laps and Verify Archive too.
Part of my collision disappears in the 3D view
Turn Culling off. If it comes back, those triangles are wound backwards. Fix them in your modelling tool and re-import.
My imported model is rotated or lying on its side
Most 3D tools export Z-up; Mario Kart Wii is Y-up. Tick Convert Z-up to Y-up when importing.
The minimap doesn't show in-game
Keep to a couple of thousand triangles: only the road, no scenery, trees or sky. Create Map warns you when you're over.
An object appears invisible or missing
Link your Mario Kart Wii disc in Settings > Games. The banner over the track editor will offer to copy the missing object files into the project.
Homebrew
Can I really write Wii apps in Swift?
A subset of it. Revolution Editor translates that subset to C and devkitPro builds it, because the Wii's processor has no Swift compiler. See Swift for what's supported.
Does Revolution Editor use AI?
No. It can run Claude Code or Codex you've installed yourself, or open Antigravity, on a homebrew project. See Coding agents.
The build says devkitPro wasn't found
Install devkitPro with the wii-dev group from devkitpro.org, or choose its folder in Settings > Homebrew.
